Recovery Month: Every Journey Matters

September is Recovery Month, a time to celebrate the strength, resilience and determination shown by people in recovery. It is also an opportunity to recognise the families, carers, friends, peers and professionals who support them along the way.

At NRN, we know there is no single definition of recovery. For some people, it may be overcoming substance use. For others, it might mean improving mental wellbeing, rebuilding relationships, finding stability, or taking steps towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. Every journey is different, and every person’s goals, challenges and experiences are unique.

That’s why we believe in meeting people where they are. Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process, and support should reflect that. We work alongside individuals to understand what matters most to them, tailoring support to their circumstances and helping them work towards goals that feel realistic, achievable and sustainable.

Recovery is often spoken about as an end point, but in reality it is an ongoing journey. It is built through small decisions, moments of courage and steady progress over time. Whether someone is taking their first step or reflecting on years of change, every stage of that journey deserves recognition.

Sharing success

A key part of our approach is the value we place on lived experience. Many members of the NRN team have personal experience of recovery or of supporting loved ones through difficult times. That insight helps us design and deliver services that are grounded in real-life experiences, ensuring people feel understood, respected and supported.

Our Peer Mentoring Scheme is an important example of this. Peer mentors use their own lived experience to support others, helping people feel less alone and providing hope that positive change is possible. Sometimes, knowing that someone else has faced similar challenges can make all the difference.

As one of our clients put it: “everybody had a story to tell, and I realised it wasn’t just raining on me”.

We firmly believe that people are the experts in their own health and wellbeing. Our job is not to tell people what their recovery should look like. Our job is to listen, support and help create the conditions where recovery can grow. Whether someone is taking their very first step or reflecting on years of progress, every journey deserves to be respected and celebrated.

Growing together

As part of Recovery Month, we asked members of the NRN community to share the words and reminders that have helped them through difficult times. The responses came from staff, clients, family members and carers. Together, they capture the reality of recovery: that it can be challenging, rewarding, frustrating, hopeful and transformative, often all at the same time.

As we mark Recovery Month, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on how far they have come, no matter where they are on their journey.

Recovery isn’t made up of one big moment. More often, it’s built through hundreds of small decisions, acts of courage and moments of perseverance that happen every day. Some days will feel easier than others, but every step forward counts.
